Five Minute Debates

Debates and Critical Thinking

To work on becoming an informed citizen, craft argumentative essays and become solid critical thinkers, we are going to add blogging and five minute debates to our classroom. This will help us in a multitude of ways. We will debate some controversial issues and challenge our thinking in these short debates. It will help us be active listeners and help us engage in honest reflection, and of course, be independent readers, writers, learners and thinkers.

Here are your first five minute debate suggestions:

  • Should people become vegetarians?
  • Is drinking milk healthy for humans?
  • Is obesity a disease?
  • Should college education be free to the public?
  • Is social networking good for society?
  • Should exceptional high school athletes be paid like professionals?

Pick one and state your claim and give at least two reasons that supports your claim. If you use outside information, such as procon.org, make sure you cite your source. After you post your claim and reasoning, then you must interact with at least two other students. Make sure all your posts are thoughtful and respectful.

I agree with college athletes not being paid. College athletes should be playing the sport because they love it. They should not be playing to only get paid.

Alex Peak I disagree with your claim that exceptional athletes should not get paid. Some of these athletes generate thousands of dollars for their school and they don’t get to keep any. It is a little unfair that the athlete does all the hard work and has nothing to show for it. That’s why they should be paid for what they do.

samanthabockerstette while you do give a good claim who will pay for college education. Even if it was “free” someone would be paying for it in the form of taxes. Is that really fair to make others pay for your education if they didn’t want to college. Nothing is never truly free there is always a catch and the catch here is that it may be free for you it will make others pay more which is unfair.

Devon, I don’t agree with your claim that college should be free. Unfortunately, it cost money to anything today. That’s how our society works. College requires utilities, employees and security to function. In order for those to work, they required money. The money doesn’t just appear out of nowhere.

I don’t agree with your statement that college athletes should be paid. College is expensive by itself. If the athlete is exceptionally good, they will get scholarships. That scholarship is their payment.

Humans have been drinking milk for thousands of years and should most definitely continue to do so. Milk is jammed packed with nutrients that are exceptionally nutritional to the body such as: vitamin A, B12, and D, potassium, calcium, and much more. Milk is also a fantastic source of protein, which is a necessity for children especially because it helps with their growth. Protein in milk doesn’t just do that, it also assists with cellular repair and immune system regulation. All in all, milk is a necessity beverage in one’s life.

@samanthabockerstette I see where you’re coming from but the idea of free college for everyone is a fantasy. Say we were to establish free college education who would provide the professors’ paychecks, the books, the dorms, and the food? That responsibility would be ours…specifically our parents. In order for the idea of free college to be fathomable we would need to raise tax rates drastically, which most families definitely cannot afford a tax raise. Therefore free college is not a good idea.

@alexpeak I agree with your claim of college athletes receiving revenue from the sales of their personal brand, it isn’t right for the NCAA to keep the profits for themselves.

lillydoerflein I agree with you partly. College athletes should be playing the sport because they want to but I believe that they should receive some compensation for their hard work. We know first hand how playing sports and focusing on academics can be difficult.

I think college athletes should be compensated in some ways for their effort. They should be playing the sport because they enjoy it, but being a student athlete is taxing, so some incentive would not hurt.

I also think college education should be provided for free, at least on the basic level. Everyone, no matter their wealth, should have the access to a basic degree so they can better their lives.
